Daybreakers (2009)

★✩✩✩✩

At first glance, Daybreakers seems like a perfectly good choice for a couple good hours of entertainment. With the likes of Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, and with the currently extremely hot topic of vampires, what could go wrong?

The idea of vampires beginning to outnumber humans—and mutating due to the lack of blood in their diets—could potentially lead to a thrillingly entertaining tale of bad versus evil, but in this case fails to do so. The plot doesn’t really lead anywhere, and the film in general is extremely (and unnecessarily) graphic and gory. The ending is much too quick, seemingly coming out of nowhere, and the main problems in the movie are left without definite solutions, leaving the viewer with a confused mind and a nauseous stomach.

One must, however, commend the fact that this film goes back to some of the more traditional “facts” about vampires, such as that they die in the sun (not just sparkle) and are invisible in mirrors. Who knew that anyone even remembered such things?

  1. Yeah.
It's not really a "good" movie per se, but it's actually a lot of fun with the right group of people. Everything is so over the top and gross, it's a fun movie to rip up while you're watching it.
